Learner Experiential Workshop
Learner drivers build their skills through experience, including forming safe habits and managing hazards on the road. When learners practice in different situations with a supervising driver, they become better prepared to handle unexpected events and are less likely to be involved in a crash.
In the 5 years to 2024, the Centre for Road Safety found that drivers 25 yrs or younger were involved in 19% of fatal crashes, while this age group represented only 13% of all licence holders in NSW.
We’re partnering with local Police to offer a special morning where learner drivers can experience road safety activities they usually don’t see during their 120 hours of supervised driving practice.
Learners and their supervising drivers are invited to join a relaxed, off-road setting to gain awareness of safer driving behaviours. Activities include:
- Random breath testing (RBT) by a Police Officer.
- An RBT bus visit and drug testing process.
- Heavy vehicle blind spot awareness from the truck driver’s perspective.
- A demonstration of stopping distances for different speeds.
- How to create a safe working zone on the roadside, e.g. for a breakdown.
- Crash statistics overview for young people.
- Access to the Police to ask questions in an informal environment.
- Meeting digital content creator, car enthusiast and motoring journalist, Glenn Torrens.
Morning tea is provided. Numbers are limited and bookings are essential.
Please note: Due to legal reasons, a parent/carer must complete the registration and accompany their child/learner driver on the day.
This is a road safety initiative made possible by funding through the Local Government Road Safety Program.
