Bushfire season ends with a reminder to be prepared

Although bushfire season officially ended this week, Port Stephens Council is reminding the community to be prepared to protect their homes and families ahead of the next fire season.

Mayor Ryan Palmer says while Port Stephens came out of the unprecedented 2020 season relatively unscathed, our community knows first-hand the devastating effect fires can bring on people, property and wildlife.

“We are incredibly lucky to have largely avoided the deadly bushfires that covered most of our country.

“But the efforts of our RFS volunteers who fought fires in other areas this year, is extraordinary and we are beyond grateful.

“Thank you to everyone who stood together with our fellow communities through this devastating fire season to show our support,” he said.

“While we might be at the end of another bushfire season, now is not the time to be complacent.

“It’s important now more than ever to get ready for the next bushfire season — update your bushfire survival plan and discuss with those in your family and household.

“While the focus for all of us is on coronavirus right now, the next bushfire season will begin in only a matter of months, so why not use this time we have at home to prepare for the season ahead,” he added.
