Kerbside collection
FAQs
We will review each application individually and prioritise them based on urgency, potential environmental impact, and location. Grouping nearby requests together helps us manage risk and plan efficient pickup routes.
No, we will review each application on a case-by-case basis to ensure that only flood affected waste is being included, based on the photos you provide.
If your waste is not due to flood damage, we highly recommend just booking a normal bulky kerbside collection as part of your allocation of two per household per year.
The application form includes an option to request assistance with moving flood affected waste to the kerbside. However, this service is provided by Emergency Services and is only available in extraordinary circumstances in select flood-affected areas.
Choosing yes to this option may require further assessment to process the application.
You must be a residential property in the Port Stephens Local Government Area (LGA) and provide photographic evidence of the flood affected waste you require to be collected. If your residential address is not identified as an impacted flood zone, it may be necessary to include photo evidence of actual flood damage that has caused the waste (i.e. roof damage, structural damage) to assist in application approval. A maximum of 10 photos can be provided.
We require confirmation of support and funding from various Government agencies, including the NSW Government, to be able to provide this service. Until we have confirmation around the type of support they are willing to provide and the strict requirements of evidence we require to provide this support, we are not able to commit to any specific recovery efforts.
This service is eligible for residents in the Port Stephens LGA who have been affected by the recent flooding and severe weather event and have flood-affected waste as a result. Each household will be assessed for eligibility based on the application, and if approved, will be provided one (1) special kerbside collection of bulky flood-affected waste.
No, council contractors are strictly prohibited from entering any private property and, as such, cannot collect any flood affected waste that is stored within the property. If you need assistance with transporting waste from private property, please contact the State Emergency Services on 132 500.
No. Council is only providing this as an extraordinary service for a limited time, with one booking per property available.
The availability of special services following future storm events will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. The decision will be influenced by the level of the emergency and the Natural Disaster category deemed by the NSW Government.
If you have already booked an On-Call Kerbside Collection, you can still apply for the special flood-affected waste collection. If the On-Call Kerbside Collection was for specific flood affected waste, residents can call Council on (02) 4988 0255 or 1300 734 470 to cancel their booking.
If you have already placed your flood affected waste on the kerbside, please leave it there. Due to the complex logistics required to execute this recovery effort, we want to advise that there may be an extended delay in collecting your flood-affected waste. We will prioritise each application that comes through based on urgency, potential environmental impact and location. This helps us manage risk and plan efficient routes by grouping nearby requests together.
Please contact us on (02) 4988 0255 or wasterecovery@portstephens.nsw.gov.au if you believe there are safety concerns regarding your flood-affected waste.

- Only 1m x 1m will be collected (1 box trailer) — If excess waste remains, only an additional 1m x 1m will be collected and only if the resident has a remaining second collection for the financial year. This second collection will be forfeited, and if the kerbside collection still has excess waste remaining, the waste will be left and must be removed by the resident immediately. If the resident's kerbside collection exceeds 1m x 1m and they do not have a second collection for the financial year, no additional waste will be collected. Excess waste will be left and must be removed by the resident immediately.
- Waste must be placed out neatly on the footpath and free of any hydrants to allow for pedestrian access
- Waste will not be collected if placed on private property, behind fencing or in trailers on or around the kerbside
- Waste must ONLY be placed out the night before collection; waste placed out on the footpath before this will be instructed to be removed, or you may be fined. This is to keep our area looking tidy and prevent others from being able to illegally dump waste
- Green waste must be bundled and tied, and able to be lifted by 2 people
- Items must be less than 1.8m in length
- Items that are not accepted waste will not be collected
- Multi-unit dwellings of up to 10 units may book individually, for units greater than 11, a joint collection day will need to be booked through their strata manager

- If you have not received a confirmation email within 24 hours of making your booking, please call 1300 734 470 to confirm.
