Little Beach boat ramp ready for launch

The long wait for a safer and better boat ramp at Little Beach in Nelson Bay is finally over with the new $2.2 million facility opening today.

Facilities and Services Group Manager Greg Kable said Little Beach boat ramp is one of the most popular ramps in the state and with the upgrade complete boaters and fishers can launch just in time for the warmer months.

“The new and improved boat ramp is designed to ensure a better boating experience for users. It has an elevated profile that extends further into the water allowing boats to launch at lower tide levels without worrying about reversing off the toe of the ramp.

“The ramp is also designed to prevent sand inundation – it is built on piles to allow for natural sand movement under the ramp instead of it accumulating on top,” added Mr Kable.

Transport for NSW (TfNSW) provided close to $1.9 million for the boat ramp upgrade under the NSW Government's Boating Now program. Port Stephens Council contributed a further $350,000 to the project.

NSW Maritime Executive Director Mark Hutchings said the work means boaters now have safer and easier access to the waterways of Port Stephens.

“This project is another great example of the NSW Government's continued investment in boating infrastructure,” Mr Hutchings said.

“The upgrade is part of a larger scope of work at the Little Beach boat ramp facility and TfNSW has committed an additional $100,000 in funding to support the $180,000 installation of new accessible amenities,” he added.

Greg Kable says this is the upgrade our community has been waiting for.

“It will provide a better experience for all local and visiting boaters and most importantly, improve safety for all those that use this facility.

“In the New Year, we will start on new accessible toilets, beach showers and improved pathways at Little Beach,” Mr Kable said.
Construction of the new amenities building at Little Beach boat ramp is expected to commence and be completed in 2022. For more information about the project visit portstephens.nsw.gov.au/projects
