Have your say on boating and fishing infrastructure

20 December 2022

A 15 year plan for boating and fishing infrastructure will help Port Stephens Council prioritise projects and access funding for improvements to boating and fishing infrastructure across Port Stephens.

Asset Section Manager John Maretich said boating and fishing is a large part of the Port Stephens lifestyle.

"Our boat ramps, wharves, pontoons and jetties are a key part of our coastal and riverfront towns and villages for both residents and visitors," Mr Maretich said.

"We want to make sure our fishing and boating facilities can sustain the future recreational visitor demand and continue to service our local communities now and in the future," he added.

Port Stephens has over 3,200 registered boats and over 6,000 people with boat licences as well as 20 boat ramp locations and 14 wharves, pontoons and jetty locations. These have been identified by the NSW government as important waterways and investment locations.

The Port Stephens Boating and Fishing Infrastructure Plan will consider what improvements, modifications and investments can be made to fishing and boating facilities.

"Input from both residents and visitors who use the facilities is crucial. We want to hear what the community wants to see for boating and fishing facilities over the next 15 years," said Mr Maretich.

"We're asking residents and visitors to participate in a short online survey. Those that complete the survey will go in the draw to win a $50 gift card,” he added.

"The information we receive from the community will help us understand the demand for future development and management of boating and fishing infrastructure and ensure we can develop a realistic and implementable plan."

The Port Stephens Boating and Fishing Infrastructure Plan is jointly funded by Port Stephens Council and the NSW Government’s Boating Now Program.
