Nelson Bay shows its pride
Members of the community and Port Stephens Council have come together to show pride in Nelson Bay by participating in an extremely successful working bee to rejuvenate and transform the town centre.
The Nelson Bay Civic Pride Group initiative, which was strongly supported by Port Stephens Council, saw more than 80 volunteers and Council staff turn up on Sunday morning to lend a hand.
Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says the day was a huge success.
“It was fantastic to see so many people willing to roll up their sleeves and volunteer their time to give our Nelson Bay town centre a much-deserved refresh,” he said.
“The Nelson Bay Civic Pride Group came to Council looking for support, and we were quick to jump on board because this is what Nelson Bay Next is all about – bringing vibrancy back to the Bay.
“When I first launched the Nelson Bay Next brand, I said that I hoped it would inspire and excite businesses, investors, tourists and the community.
“Council has been working hard on delivering our first key project, the Yacaaba Street Extension, as well as developing the revised Nelson Bay strategy,” he said.
“But Nelson Bay Next is for more than just Council projects. That’s why I couldn’t be more proud to see our community taking that idea, running with it and making things happen,” he said.
The Tomaree Business Chamber’s Peter Clough, who has been the driving force behind the working bee, says he has been overwhelmed by the amount of support.
“We’ve had so many offers from the community and local businesses to help. It’s great to see so many people keen to give Nelson Bay a lift,” Mr Clough said.
“The Nelson Bay Civic Pride Group is all about making our town a more appealing place, and all of the volunteers and many of the businesses have definitely achieved that today,” he said.
Mayor Palmer said the working bee was a fantastic end to National Volunteer Week.
“We’re lucky in Port Stephens to have so many people and businesses who are generously willing to give their time, energy and resources to make our community a better place. I can’t think of a better way to end National Volunteer Week!
“I want to personally thank everyone who volunteered. Whether you picked up a paintbrush, a shovel, a hose or a scrubbing brush – you made a huge difference.
“Thank you also to the Nelson Bay Civic Pride Group, all of the Council staff involved, and all of the businesses and community groups that have given so generously.”
