Mustons Road, Karuah - Pedestrian Improvements
The works are designed to allow for the marking of a pedestrian path on the eastern side of Mustons Road which will assist safe passage for both vehicles and pedestrians. Traffic coming from Karuah township will have right of way. Traffic coming towards Karuah township will need to giveway to oncoming traffic. There will be no overtaking or passing allowed on this short section of Mustons Road. The arrangement will be similar to one-lane bridges in some areas of the region.
Mustons Road is used heavily by pedestrians and cyclists as well as vehicles. Over the years there has been community concerns raised regarding pedestrian and cyclist safety along Mustons Road and particularly at this creek crossing.
Earlier this year a petition with 345 signatures was submitted to Council requesting an upgrade to the creek crossing and associated culvert as a matter of urgency to ensure pedestrian safety.
This matter was referred by Councillors to the Local Traffic Committee. The Local Traffic Committee is comprised of representatives from Council, Local Members of NSW Parliament, Port Stephens Highway Patrol, Roads and Maritime Services and Bus Company representatives.
The Local Traffic Committee have supported this option as it can be implemented almost immediately and will help improve pedestrian and cyclist safety.
The preferred future option includes a two lane, two way road with a separate pedestrian walkway. The cost of these works is significant as they involve the replacement of the culvert beneath the road and would require significant environment impact assessment.
Funding of this preferred future option has been allocated in our 2024/2025 Capital Works Program which is subject to change.
