Amy Hansen of Anna Bay and Catrina Thompson of Corlette will participate in the Wakashio Marathon on Sunday 27 January thanks to assistance from Port Stephens Council and the Port Stephens Sister Cities Committee.

Port Stephens Sister Cities Committee Chairman Nigel Dique says the runners will be put up in homestay accommodation and will have the opportunity to experience the Japanese way of life.

“As part of the marathon exchange, our local runners will be home-hosted for five nights to experience the unique Japanese way of life.

“They will also meet Mayor Kenichi Kanamaru at a civic ceremony, learn how to make traditional Japanese confectionary, experience a tea ceremony and visit a local elementary school,” Mr Dique said.

Mayor Ryan Palmer says Port Stephens Council is proud to support this unique cultural experience.

“Port Stephens Council has a strong relationship with our sister city Tateyama, and this marathon exchange is an important part of our long-standing friendship.

“This is much more than just a run — it’s an opportunity for participants to learn from others, experience something completely different, and form lasting friendships and memories,” Mayor Palmer said.

“I wish Amy and Catrina all the best in Tateyama and I know they will do Port Stephens proud,” he added.

Council and the Port Stephens Sister Cities Committee provided each participant with $300 to help cover airfares, passport costs, meals and other travel costs.
