Kick goals with an International Women’s Day scholarship

Port Stephens women have the opportunity to receive a $1000 scholarship to achieve a goal in 2020 as part of local celebrations for International Women’s Day.

For the third year, Port Stephens Council is offering $1000 scholarships to 3 local women aged 16 and over.

The scholarship program is designed to support local women and the valuable contribution they make to our community across a range of fields — arts, culture, environment, business, community, health and sport.

Councillor Sarah Smith is encouraging women with an important goal they would like to achieve in 2020 to apply.

“Port Stephens Council is proud to offer the International Women’s Day scholarships again in 2020,” Cr Smith said.

“It’s just one way Council is helping to create a community where women are safe, healthy, equally represented and valued for their contribution to society.

“Port Stephens is full of incredible women! These scholarships are about promoting equality and giving women an opportunity to achieve something that they might not otherwise have the means to do,” she said.

Last year’s winners — Saffron Quantrell, Maya Stewart and Emily Healy — have used their scholarship to achieve in the fields of sport, education and publishing.

Applications close Sunday 16 February 2020, with the winners to be announced at the Rotary Club of Salamander Bay's International Women's Day lunch on Friday 6 March 2020.

Gary Stanton, President of the Rotary Club of Salamander Bay, says Rotary is proud to be part of the joint initiative with Council.

“International Women’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate women’s achievement, raise awareness against bias and take action for equality.

“This year’s theme is Each for Equal and we’re proud to be partnering with Council to provide a platform for local women to succeed,” he said.
