Karuah community decides on new fire station location
The votes have been counted and the community of Karuah has decided - Engel Avenue is the preferred location of the new Rural Fire Service (RFS) station.
After the existing site at Wattle Street was deemed unsuitable due to infrastructure and engineering factors, the two alternative locations were put to a community vote.
The online poll attracted 102 submissions, with 73.5 per cent of respondents opting for the Engel Avenue site over Lionel Morten Oval.
Council's Emergency Management Coordinator Cameron Donaldson says the community has been clear about where they would like to see the new fire station built.
“It’s great to see that so many people took the time to have their say on the location of Karuah’s new fire station. The feedback is important, as we want to make sure this facility is built in the best place to meet the community’s needs in a variety of emergency situations,” Mr Donaldson said.
“Engel Avenue attracted almost three-quarters of the vote due to the fact it offers more space, more parking, less impact on the sports field and is close to the Karuah township in case of an emergency.
Mr Donaldson says Port Stephens Council will oversee construction of the new facility and is currently seeking funding for the project from the NSW Rural Fire Service.
"Now that a location has been decided, we can begin the design phase and seek funding to commence construction.
"Once complete, our Rural Fire Service volunteers will have a modern facility that will enable them to deliver effective services to the local community," he added.
