Inclusive new playground officially opened in Shoal Bay

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer has officially opened a brand new all-abilities playground at Shoal Bay’s Bernie Thompson Reserve.

The $120,000 playground incorporates three swings, climbing equipment, a net carousel, balancing rope and nature play areas, as well as bespoke adventure-themed play equipment.

The NSW Government also contributed a further $12,000 to fence the playground.

Mayor Palmer says the playground has already been put to good use by the local community, and he’s received positive feedback on the new design and location.

“The brand new Shoal Bay playground really does have something for children of every age and ability, making it inclusive and fun for all kids to play on together,” Mayor Palmer said.

“Last year, we asked the Shoal Bay community to vote on their preferred location, and it was decided that Bernie Thompson Reserve would provide the ideal natural shade and space needed for a playground.

“I’ve already had lots of positive feedback on the design and the location. Now, with the addition of the new fence funded by the NSW Government, local families and visitors can fully enjoy this playground while knowing their children are safe and secure.

“It really is the perfect place for kids to play,” he added.

The new Shoal Bay playground is located at Bernie Thompson Reserve on Government Road, Shoal Bay.
