27 new Australians welcomed at Port Stephens citizenship ceremony

27 Port Stephens residents became Australian citizens this week in the first citizenship ceremony to be held since the COVID-19 global pandemic began.

The group of conferees originally hailed from Brazil, Cambodia, Czechoslovakia, France, India, Italy, New Zealand, Samoa, Thailand, United Kingdom and the United States, and on Monday they officially became Aussies.

The ceremonies, held at Council’s Raymond Terrace chambers, were staggered throughout the day due to physical distancing measures and were led by Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer.

Mayor Ryan Palmer welcomed the COVID safe ceremonies.

“We’ve all missed out on important life events and sacrificed social gatherings as a result of coronavirus these past few months,” he said.

“I want to commend everyone in Port Stephens for their efforts to keep safe throughout COVID. Although we’re not yet out of the woods, I’m thrilled that despite what is happening in other parts of our country and the world, we’re able to welcome our newest Australians to Port Stephens.

“I also want to thank each and every one of our new citizens for bringing their unique cultures and perspectives to our region. This is what makes Port Stephens an even more incredible place to live,” Mayor Palmer said.
