Changed traffic conditions Kerrigan Street, Nelson Bay
Port Stephens Council will be changing the road priorities at the intersection of Kerrigan Street and Trevally Street, Nelson Bay.
Following representations from residents about the volume and speed of traffic along Kerrigan Street, Nelson Bay, a traffic data report was commissioned in June 2018.
As a result of the traffic data report the Port Stephens Local Traffic Committee recommended:
- change in road priority at the intersection of Kerrigan Street and Trevally Street;
- installation of ‘Stop’ control at the Fingal Street intersection; and
- additional line marking along Kerrigan Street.
These measures are intended to lower the volume and speed of traffic along Kerrigan Street.
The function of the Port Stephens Local Traffic Committee is to recommend regulatory traffic controls on local roads. The local traffic committee consists of representation from Police, Roads and Maritime Services (RMS), the local member of State Parliament, Local Councillors and bus company representatives. The traffic regulatory controls that are considered by the Committee include parking controls, give way and stop controls and all line marking.
What this means for you
All vehicles along Trevally Street will have priority over traffic coming along Kerrigan Street, with traffic along Kerrigan Street now needing to give way.
The decision to change the priority at this intersection is to encourage road users to use Trevally Street rather than Kerrigan Street thereby reducing the volume of cars along Kerrigan Street.
The traffic data collected in Kerrigan Street indicated that the speed of some traffic particularly when travelling towards Tomaree Community Hospital to be excessive. The traffic changes for Kerrigan Street is designed to reduce the speed of vehicles.
Residents will need to be careful when approaching the intersection considering the changed road priorities and other road users. The map below should help clarify the changed traffic conditions:
What happens next?
Council will shortly be on site re-marking the road to include hold lines at each end of Kerrigan Street, removing hold lines on Trevally Street and installing the required signage. Should this change in road priority be unsuccessful in reducing the volume and speed of traffic along Kerrigan Street further works such as traffic calming devices along Kerrigan Street, ie., speed humps, may be considered.
