Nominate those who make Port Stephens great
Nominations are now open for the Port Stephens Annual Awards! For the first time, environmentally-minded people will be recognised for their contribution to the community.
Held on Australia Day each year, the awards are an opportunity to celebrate the people who have made an outstanding contribution to Port Stephens.
Community Development and Engagement Coordinator Amber Herrmann says Council is looking for nominations.
“The Annual Awards are a wonderful way to show someone you value the contribution they make to our community. Whether that’s by volunteering, being a role model for others, enabling others to succeed, or excelling in their chosen field,” Ms Herrmann said.
“This year, we’re excited to have a new category — Environmental Citizen of the Year — recognising groups or individuals who have shown significant service to the environment.
“This could be someone who tried to preserve the environment, reduce litter and improve recycling, or someone who has used the Return and Earn scheme to fundraise for a meaningful cause,” she said.
"We're also seeking nominations for Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Freeman of Port Stephens, the Port Stephens Medal, Sportsperson of the Year and Cultural Endeavour.
“If you know someone who goes a little bit further, opens their arms a little bit wider or gives that little bit extra to inspire us all to make every day better — nominate them today!”
2018 Port Stephens Citizen of the Year Ben Niland was recognised for his service to the community of Medowie and his fundraising for Bale out the Drought.
“It was an amazing honour — one which I never expected — to be named Port Stephens Citizen of the Year last year.
“Many people give up their time, effort and, in some cases, finances to make Port Stephens a better place to live and it’s so important to recognise this service to the community,” he said.
