Cycleways

Port Stephens is great for cycling, from serious mountain bikers right through to families who enjoy a safe and scenic bike ride. A Port Stephens bike ride offers amazing views and very little traffic.

Port Stephens has many shared paths that provide safe cycling around the peninsula, taking you from Salamander Bay right through to Fingal Bay with some spectacular waterviews as you pass from Bagnalls Beach to Dutchies Beach to Nelson Bay. There's some shaded riding through bush and reserves from Shoal Bay to Fingal Bay and plenty of parks, playgrounds and cafes along the way.

You can choose from shorter rides of 2km, or longer rides of 8km and 12km routes that are ideal for family outings, commuting or recreational riding and walking. With approximately 50km of shared paths throughout the area, there is plenty of scenery to enjoy!

Long Rides

Several long routes are available including 2km, 8km and 12km routes that connect to well maintained picnic, bbq and recreation areas as well as links to shops and playing fields.

There are ample areas to rest and relax with amenities in many of the parks and reserves along the way.

Raymond Terrace to Heatherbrae - 2km

This route joins the southern end of the Raymond Terrace CBD (Swan Street) to Heatherbrae. Picnic facilities and public amenities are available at Bettles Park and also at the Heatherbrae Service Centre (Pacific Highway).

Raymond Terrace to Medowie - 11km

This route connects the two communities of Raymond Terrace and Medowie. Starting at the Lakeside Leisure Centre carpark, the route passes Finnan Park Picnic Area, (bbq and toilet facilities) then skirts the Grahamstown Dam shoreline. Next stop is the Grahamstown Aquatic Centre (picnic area) and then through the rural area of Medowie into the main shopping centre. This is an easy ride for all users with minimal road crossing points with the route being entirely off road.

Nelson Bay to Fingal Bay - 8km

This route connects the three communities of Nelson Bay, Shoal Bay and Fingal Bay. The route runs from Dutchies Beach to Fingal Bay via Nelson Bay and Shoal Bay.

The route runs through the busy foreshore marina area of Nelson Bay with many facilities available (food, toilets, marina activities, beaches, picnic and play equipment) then along the coast of the bay passed the playing fields and recreation areas at Neil Carol Park (picnic, skateboard ramp, toilets).

It involves riding on road (Achilles Street to Gowrie Avenue) and requires care for younger riders even though it is a quiet street. Next stop is Shoal Bay, with all the facilities of a small village (shops, great beaches, toilets) and then onto Fingal Bay where you will find ample parks and facilities for picnics and recreation with a patrolled surf beach.

This is a relatively easy ride for all users with care needed on the on road sections (Achilles Street, Nelson Bay and Horace Street, Shoal Bay).
