Hairdressing, beauty and tattooing

To start a hairdressing, beauty salon, piercing or tattoo business in Port Stephens you will need to take the following steps:

You will need to contact Council to determine whether development consent is required. If consent is required, you will need to lodge the appropriate plans and paperwork for Council to assess.

Once you have the appropriate consents, you will need to register your business Council by filling out the following registration form: Business Registration Form

When you believe your business is ready for operation, contact Council's Environmental Health Team. You will need to contact this team at least 48 hours before you plan on commencing operation so that an inspection can take place.

It is important to note that Council's Environmental Health Team carry out inspections of these businesses to ensure that they are adhering to relevant health and safety standards.

Note: premises that only offer hairdressing and other body decorating and grooming practices which do not deliberately pierce the skin are not inspected by Council.

You can contact the Environmental Health Team on (02) 4988 0255

Once the inspection has taken place, you will be advised by Council when it is okay to commence operations.
