Council's safety culture leading the way in NSW

Publish Date 01/12/2016

Port Stephens Council has been recognised by Safework NSW as having the best Workplace Health and Safety Management System in the Public Sector and Not for Profit category in the 2015-2016 year.

Council's Injury Management Annual Report 2015-2016, presented at the last Ordinary meeting, detailed the vast improvements made over the past five years to Council's safety record, which has resulted in less workplace injuries, less severe injuries and a reduction in workers compensation premiums – from $1.8 million to $558,000 per annum – resulting in significant financial savings for Council.

Additionally, in the 2015-2016 Workers Compensation report from local government insurer, StateCover, Port Stephens Council has achieved the number one average premium rating across councils of a comparable size, well below the local government average.

Port Stephens Council General Manager, Wayne Wallis, has acknowledged the efforts of staff for these impressive safety results.

"Congratulations are to be extended across the whole organisation, from our holiday parks, to our libraries, depot staff and those based in our administration building."

Mr Wallis said that while the result is outstanding, the effort needs to continue.

"Less people are getting hurt at Port Stephens than ever before, but, unfortunately, we still do have some accidents in the workplace.

"We can't rest until we completely eliminate people getting hurt or injured at work," he said.

Recent awards in the areas of Risk Management, Workplace Safety and Leadership Excellence have seen Council identified as an Employer of Choice.

Mr Wallis said this is due to Port Stephens Council's whole of organisation focus on safety.

"Our safety culture is one of the best in NSW and that is something to celebrate," he said.
