Council a finalist for Employer of Choice

Publish Date 31/07/2017

Port Stephens Council has been nominated as a finalist in the 'Employer of Choice (Public Sector & NFP)' category of the 2017 Australian HR Awards.

This is the fifth consecutive year Council has been named a finalist in various categories of the Australian HR Awards.

Michelle Gilliver-Smith, Council's Organisation Development Manager, says the nomination is particularly significant this year.

"These are very prestigious awards and it's always an honour to be named a finalist alongside some of the country's major corporations, including Cancer Council NSW and BankVic," Ms Gilliver-Smith said.

"This year the nomination is particularly meaningful, as it has been a very challenging 14 months for our staff in the face of possible council amalgamations.

"Despite this uncertainty, our staff have continued to show enormous resilience, which is a great measure of an engaged workforce," she said.

Ms Gilliver-Smith says Port Stephens Council sees great value in being considered an employer of choice.

"Our goal is to attract the best people to do the best job for the Port Stephens community," she said.

"Council strives to recognise and reward the whole person by offering flexible working arrangements, supported education, an extensive health and wellness program and opportunities to progress within the organisation.

"We're immensely excited about these nominations and about what we're doing here at Port Stephens Council in the human resources space," she said.

The annual HR Awards bring together industry leaders to celebrate excellence in the HR profession, recognising individuals, teams and companies for their outstanding achievements in people management.

The prestigious ceremony will be held on Friday 8 September at The Star in Sydney.
