Project details

The shared path project for Fern Bay will be 1.7km long and will provide a much needed safe link for both pedestrians and cyclists.

Stage 1 – Between Vardon and Taylor Roads
Stage 1 was completed in 2021 and involved the construction of a new 430 metre path between Vardon and Taylor Roads. The new shared path replaced a narrow footpath making it suitable for both pedestrians and cyclists.

Stage 2 – Between Bayway Village and Vardon Road and between Taylor and Braid Roads
Council obtained the necessary heritage approvals in November 2023 for the construction of the remaining shared path sections alongside Nelson Bay Road and the works are planned to be undertaken from January to mid 2024.

Traffic on Nelson Bay Road will be impacted throughout the works with speed reductions and lane closures in place to ensure the safety of both the crews and the public. Temporary footpath arrangements will be put in place and maintained for the duration of the works to ensure the safe passage of pedestrians whilst the works are underway.

Shared paths are 2 to 2.5m wide and allow space for both pedestrians and cyclists. Where footpaths are generally  0.8 to 1.2m wide and are designed for pedestrian use.
