LANDHOLDER PARTNERSHIP
We are looking to partner with landholders in our LGA to protect and restore koala habitat on private land.
In filling out this form, there is no predefined level of involvement or commitment required from community members; it serves as an initial step rather than a binding commitment to joining the partnership. We welcome all levels of involvement from our community members.
Could your land be a safe space for koalas?
We are calling on landholders and community members who might be interested in partnering with Council to manage koalas and their habitats on private land. The type of land we are interested in includes lands such as small residential blocks to large agricultural parcels across Port Stephens.
What is a koala safe space?
A koala safe space is a feature of habitat or land that contributes positively to the health, wellbeing and long-term conservation of koalas across the Port Stephens LGA. They can be found in rural and urban areas and span from a single paddock or yard tree to a large bush block. Safe spaces include corridors* for safe movement of koalas.
*corridors - connections across the landscape that link up areas of habitat
What we can do together:
- Plant koala food and shelter trees to restore land to make more habitat for koalas. This includes anything from planting a handful of koala feed trees to large scale plantings.
- Remove weeds to make existing habitat better for koalas
- Find out how koalas move through the landscape (population counting, monitoring, surveys, reporting koala sightings or issues) to tell us more about our koala populations
- Create koala friendly backyards
- Identify important connectivity corridors or linking areas which help koalas move through our landscape
If you have a safe space on your land and are interested in participating in the partnership please click “Next” to fill in this form. Even if you cannot provide a safe space on your own property, there are other ways to be involved, including reporting sightings, citizen science and advocacy. We would love to hear from you.
