Permits and Post Fire Season 2019

Due to the recent rain falls received across the Cessnock, Maitland, Port Stephens and Dungog Local Government Areas (LGAs), the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) is lifting the suspension on Permits until the end of the Bushfire Danger Period (BFDP).

Permits for hazard reduction burning are required for residents that meet the following stipulations:

  • You meet YOUR local council regulations for hazard reduction burning.
  • You have obtained a copy of ‘Before you light that fire’ from the RFS website http://www.rfs.nsw.gov.auor by contacting the Lower Hunter Fire Control Centre on (02) 4015 0000 during business hours.
  • You have gained environmental approval (if required).
  • You have contacted your local Fire Permit Issuing Officer to obtain a permit. If you are unsure who that may be, please contact (02) 4015 0000 and one of our staff will help you out.
  • You have notified all adjoining landowners/occupiers and your local fire authority at least 24 hours prior to lighting.
  • You have checked the weather conditions on the day are suitable for lighting.

If this is your first time preparing for a hazard reduction burn or you would like some advice on how to safely manage fire on your property, please contact the staff at the Lower Hunter Fire Control Centre on (02) 4015 0000 or email Lower.Hunter@rfs.nsw.gov.au and they will be happy to assist.
