Sustainable Transport in the Lower Hunter RegionLast modified: September 24, 2008 - 11:25 AM
A report commissioned by Cessnock, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Newcastle and Port Stephens Councils. Volume 1 explains urban sustainability and its impact on transportation. It suggests a range of opportunities for putting sustainable transport principles into practice in the Lower Hunter by improving current transport systems and introducing new concepts. The roles of Local, State and Federal Governments are enunciated and a set of action plans is presented. Volume 2 gives detailed background information on the region's profile in terms of population characteristics, existing transport systems and planning initiatives. It discusses issues relating to the provision of efficient and effective public transport and describes sustainable transport initiatives in other regions. Additional information on sustainable transport can be obtained by referring to the Port Stephens Community Settlement and Infrastructure Strategy. The strategy is based on the principles of Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD) and establishes a future direction for the provision of infrastructure, including transport, in the Port Stephens LGA. The strategy also aims to establish compatibility with the Lower Hunter Regional Strategy released by the Department of Planning in October 2006. Contact details
