Newcastle Airport Economic Opportunities Study
Last modified: October 11, 2007 - 12:00 AM
The Study investigates the potential economic drivers and influences for economic opportunities at and around the Newcastle Airport.
The project was a joint initiative between Port Stephens Council, NSW Department of State and Regional Development and the Premiers Department.
Port Stephens Council recognises the potential for Newcastle Airport and surrounding land to provide economic and employment opportunities for people of Port Stephens and the Hunter Region.
Council wishes to have a vision and plan for the area so that development can be coordinated and planned for the best outcome over the medium and long term. This study will provide a context to guide detailed planning studies and infrastructure investigations for the area.
STUDY OBJECTIVESThe objectives established in the study brief are:
- to identify emerging trends in activities located adjacent or near to civil and military airports and relate this to the study area;
- identify existing and potential opportunities for development of the study area which will diversify the local economy, create jobs, and improve the competitiveness of local firms;
- foster regional integration of activities for opportunistic and sustainable development of the study area;
- establish a context in which land in the study area can be perceived as an opportunity for the development of employment generating activity;
- review the economic determinants that are likely to affect future land use opportunities in the Study Area;
- produce a series of plausible scenarios for the Study Area.
