Aircraft Noise Exposure Forecast (ANEF) Maps

Last modified: February 26, 2009 - 4:50 PM

Aircraft noise is a factor, which has attracted a great deal of community attention. Military airfields in particular with the operations of fast jet aircraft are the subject of concern by local residents.

RAAF Base Williamtown is located approximately 15 km north of the city centre of Newcastle in central NSW and is part of the Local Government Area of the Port Stephens Council. The property covers an area of 800 hectares with a perimeter of 15 km along Nelson Bay Road to the south-east, Medowie Road to the east and Hunter Water Corporation land to the north and west. Associated with RAAF Base Williamtown, is the Salt Ash Air Weapons Range (SAWR)which is used for air-surface gunnery and bombing practice. SAWR is located approximately 6 km to the north-east of the Base and contains various target and support facilities. The most effective means of reducing the negative reaction of the local Communities to the impact of aircraft noise is through proper planning of the land use in the areas surrounding airfields. In order to ensure that the land around airfields in Australia is appropriately planned, the concept of the Australian Noise Exposure Forecast (ANEF) was developed. The ANEF system was developed by the National Acoustics Laboratory and is based on the US Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) Noise Exposure Forecast (NEF) system. The ANEF system has been endorsed by the Australian Government to be used as the basis for land use planning for the areas in the vicinity of Australian airfields and is now documented in the Australian Standard AS2021-2000 Acoustics -Aircraft Noise Intrusion - Building Siting and Construction. The standard identifies suitable land uses within the various ANEF zones. If you are considering buying land or building in the Port Stephens Local Government Area, view the 2012 Australian Noise Exposure Forecast maps and the Summary Reports on the Department of Defence Web Site to determine the impact on the property
