Port Stephens to chart new future - Media ReleaseLast modified: October 23, 2008 - 10:37 AM
Port Stephens Council has today announced the launch of its ambitious Port Stephens Futures Project. The project will involve the largest community consultation process yet undertaken by Council. It will result in a document that will map a future vision for the area and outline the strategies to achieve that vision In launching the initiative, council publicly released the Port Stephens Futures Issues Paper. This document will be used to stimulate conversation with the local community on a range of challenges facing Port Stephens over the next 10 plus years. Speaking today Port Stephen Mayor, Cr Bruce MacKenzie, said the project was a significant one for the Port Stephens area. “We have a number of serious challenges that we need to deal with, including rising sea levels, an ageing demographic and a population that is set to increase future development in the coming decades,” he said. “All of these things will mean changes for Port Stephens. Including how and where we live and how we get access to key services such as health, education and transport.” “It is very important that, as a community, we work together to ensure that Port Stephens’ future is the one we want – not one thrust upon us by outside forces” “The Future Issues Paper outlines these challenges as a first step.” “We want the community to read this Issues Paper and bring their ideas to community meetings we will be holding throughout November,” Cr MacKenzie added. “To the people of Port Stephens I would say – get involved, the future is yours.” Contact details |
