Sports Star Finalists Named - Media releaseLast modified: October 17, 2008 - 4:13 PM
The finalists in Port Stephens’ prestigious Sports Star Awards have been selected after a difficult process that sifted through an outstanding list of nominees. The awards night, to be held on Thursday 6 November at Nelson Bay Diggers, will be hosted by former State of Origin player Mark Hughes. Guest speaker will be AFL legend Kevin Sheedy, who last year parted ways with Essendon after a record-breaking 27 years at the helm. The major awards include Team of the Year, Junior Sports Star and the Sports Star of the Year Award. Last year’s winner was young AFL player Craig Bird, currently starring for the Sydney Swans. Amongst the nominees for this year’s top award are Olympian and Boat Harbour resident Michael Diamond and outstanding young golfer Grant Scott. The awards night also recognises those people who contribute behind the scenes, including Club Administrator and Outstanding Contribution of the year. Speaking today, Port Stephens Council General Manager Peter Gesling said the awards night was an outstanding event. “This night not only provides the opportunity to recognise those people who have contributed and achieved much in their chosen sport,” he said. “It also acknowledges the very important role sport plays in a healthy society and in bringing our community together.” “I’d like to wish all the nominees the very best in what will obviously be a very stiff competition.” All proceeds from the evening go toward the Sports Star Junior Development Scheme. This scheme supports elite young athletes who require financial assistance to pursue their sport at the top level. A full list of nominees is attached. Download document Contact details |
