PORT STEPHENS TOURISM REAFFIRMS MID NORTH COAST BRANDING - Media Release

Last modified: September 26, 2008 - 3:03 PM

In response to a number of media reports on regional tourism alliances, Port Stephens Tourism has resolved to reaffirm its position as part of the Mid North Coast.

After extensive research and debate, Port Stephens Tourism members decided to align themselves with Mid North Coast Tourism in 2001.

According to the Chairman of Port Stephens Tourism, Mr Peter Dann, “whilst the Hunter brand polled well as a winery based destination, there was little association in that brand with Port Stephens.”

“We are perceived as a coastal destination in our own right, both in domestic and international markets. We will continue to work with the Hunter region where appropriate, however it will be under the Port Stephens and/or Mid North Coast Banner.”

“As part of its strategic planning process, the Board of Port Stephens Tourism Limited reaffirmed its decision to remain with Mid North Coast Tourism, with no current plans to join or amalgamate with Hunter Tourism.”

Also speaking today, Port Stephens Council General Manager Peter Gesling said the local tourism industry was a strong and vibrant one, with a strong sense of direction.

“Port Stephens Council has supported the decision as it represents the view of the industry,” he said.

“The success of the local industry is also testament to the strong branding and the efforts of the Tourism Organisations and their members.”
