Port Stephens Council leads the way for children - Media releaseLast modified: September 19, 2008 - 8:27 AM
Port Stephens Council is playing a leading role in the formation of a new framework that will guide how Council’s across NSW consider children’s needs when building local environments. Port Stephens has formed a partnership with Wollongong, Liverpool, and the City of Sydney Councils along with the NSW Commission for Children and Young People to develop a comprehensive series of indicators that have the potential to affect legislative changes for NSW. Council is currently reviewing its planning controls and guidelines against best practice in an effort to establish a set of recommendations to be submitted to the Commission. It is anticipated that this process will be completed by December, with the Commission aiming to release the new framework across all NSW local governments by January 2009. Speaking today, Child Friendly Communities Project Officer Deaynne Bourke, said the project would help highlight the importance of considering children when building communities. “Local government has the potential to impact significantly on how our children and young people interact with their environment and ultimately how they grow into adults,” she said. “I think creating spaces and places where children feel safe moving around, socialising and exploring their environment is a fundamental responsibility that we need to meet as a society.” “We have a responsibility to consider the affects of our built environments on children – do they promote safety? Do they provide safe social interaction? Do they provide access to facilities and services? Do they encourage healthy development and well-being?
“Ultimately, if we can make a community more child friendly, we make it a better place.” Contact details |
