Junior sports stars receive boost - Media Release

Last modified: September 17, 2008 - 3:56 PM

Port Stephen Council has contributed $4250 to five outstanding young athletes as part of its Sports Star Junior Development Scheme

The scheme has been designed to assist talented junior sportspeople from across Port Stephens to continue to develop in their chosen sport.

In particular, it focuses on those who may not be able to pursue their sport at the highest level due to financial limitations. 12 applications were received in July this year.

Funds for the Development Scheme are drawn from profits associated with the Port Stephens Sports Star Awards night.

Speaking today, President of the Port Stephens Sports Council Ron Swan said the scheme was an outstanding example of Council supporting its young people.

“The Port Stephens Sports Star Junior Development Scheme is a fantastic program and something that Council is very proud of,” he said.

“Assisting talented kids, particularly those with limited financial resources is a truly effective way that Council can contribute to a richer community.”

Recipients for this year are:
Jade Brown   16 Hockey
Kurt Warden  15 Rugby League
Joshua Davies 16 Rugby League/Touch
Timothy Waters 15 Rugby Union
Taena Nisbett 15 Rugby Union
