World record attempt at Boomerang Park - Media ReleaseLast modified: September 12, 2008 - 5:43 PM
Port Stephens Council library staff are encouraging children from across the region to help them break the world record for the most children being read to at one time. Kids aged 0 to 5 are asked to gather at Boomerang Par Raymond Terrace from 10.00 until 12.30pm on Tuesday 23 September for ‘Stories in the Park’ Stories in the Park is a fun and interactive morning where children and parents are encouraged to adopt reading and story-telling from a very young age. Last year the event set a world benchmark with 338 children present to hear stories from a wide range of speakers. It is hoped that number will be broken in 2008. Speaking today, librarian Vicki James said the day would have something for everyone. “The morning is about more than just reading stories,” she said. “The children will hear and see a magic show, an indigenous story teller, music performers, the NSW Fire Service and a puppeteer.” “By the end of the morning, we hope these kids understand that story telling is a fun, enjoyable pastime that should be enjoyed from birth – not something that should wait until school begins.”
Stories in the Park is jointly sponsored by Port Stephens Council and Communities for Children. Contact details |
