Port Stephens Council tonight recognised the region’s most outstanding community contributors at its annual Community Awards night.

The highlight of the evening saw local State Member and former Mayor of Port Stephens Craig Baumann recognised as a Freeman of Port Stephens. This award is presented for exceptional service of the highest order to Port Stephens, Australia or humanity in general.

There were two other categories of awards presented tonight – The Port Stephens Service Awards to individual or groups for service to the community and the Port Stephens Medal which is awarded to individuals for distinguished community service of a high degree.

Port Stephens Service Award winners were:
 Robyn Parsons    Youth Services
 Port Stephens Community Care Home and Community Care
 Kathleen Hamilton    Parks and Reserves
 Jeanette Antrum    Aged Care
 Michael Patrick Francis   Arts

Port Stephens Medal winners were:
 Robert Melehan    Rural Fire Service
 Ian Hollings     Volunteer Coast Guard
 Hope Simpson    Overall Community Service
 Martin Stewart Soper   Sporting Community
 Erin Devin     Port Stephens Access Committee

Speaking tonight, Port Stephen Mayor Ron Swan said the outstanding calibre of nominees was a great reflection on Port Stephens.

“These individuals and groups have demonstrated their contribution through determination, focus and commitment and are true role models in the community, showing that anyone can make a difference,” he said.

“As volunteers, they have demonstrated that the role of the local church, or the family, or the Elderly or disabled Association are a vital part of a healthy community. It is in these places that a community is built.”

“I am proud that it is the people who work hardest that are being acknowledged here tonight.”
