Community to bring bush regeneration to Boat Harbour - Media release

Last modified: September 2, 2008 - 12:05 AM

Port Stephens Council will sponsor monthly bush regeneration days at beautiful Boat Harbour, commencing this Saturday 30 August from 9.30am to 11am.

The Council initiative will see the community offered the chance to increase their knowledge of the coastal environment while they work beside trained bush regenerators to beautify the area.

The day will be run by ‘Trees in Newcastle’ who have over 15 years experience in bush regeneration.

Speaking today, Community Support Officer Philippa Lloyd said the working bees would provide a unique opportunity for local residents to take ownership of their local area.

“I think there are two really good opportunities for locals under this initiative,” she said.

“The first is to gain a greater understanding of our coastal reserves and in particular the identification of our native plants and weeds.”

“It also gives local residents the chance to have a real and positive impact on their environment.”

“We will be running these sessions monthly through until November, which means everybody who is keen to be involved will have a chance to do so.”

The regeneration day this Saturday will commence next to the public toilets off Kingsley Drive, Boat Harbour. Participants are asked to wear enclosed shoes and bring gloves, sunscreen and a hat.
