Port Stephens shows the way forward for economic development - Media Release

Last modified: September 2, 2008 - 12:02 AM

The Hunter Business Chamber has enthusiastically endorsed Port Stephens Council’s economic development model as one which other Council’s should be seeking to emulate.

Business Port Stephens, headed by former Hunter Economic Development Corporation CEO Lesley Morris has, in a short space of time, attracted the favourable attention of several leading business people.

Speaking today Gillian Summers, board member of the Hunter Business Chamber and chair of the Chamber’s Infrastructure Committee said Port Stephens Council’s engagement with the business community was a smart move.

“The private sector is obviously a major shaper of local economies and asking business directly about development direction is an astute step in the right direction," she said.

“Business is uniquely placed to identify new opportunities to stimulate the economy, attract investment and create new jobs.”

“So by partnering with the private sector, Port Stephens has the chance to optimise its development through a concert of ideas between government and industry.”

Also speaking today, chair of the Hunter Business Chamber’s Defence Industry Committee and General Manager of C-E Solutions Boris Novak, said the model adopted by Port Stephens Council brought with it a host of advantages.

“Business Port Stephens and its Economic Development Advisory Panel is the ideal means to complete the real leg work for business and industry initiatives,” he said.

“Rather than relying on volunteers, such as you would find in a business chamber, this model proactively seeks opportunities, working with business under a collaborative framework.”

“It also operates under a strong governance structure as required by local government legislation, but is subject to business mentoring and I think that provides an ideal balance.”

Mr Novak added that the model was sure to be scrutinised by other local government organisations.

“I applaud Port Stephens Council for this innovation. I am confident that other Councils will maintain a watchful eye on it with intent to replicate it.”

Both Gillian Summers and Boris Novak are members of the Port Stephens Economic Advisory Panel.
