Library comes to life in Port Stephens - Media ReleasePort Stephens Council will celebrate Local Government Week with the presentation of a Living Library on Saturday 2 August from 10.00am to 12.00pm at Tomaree Library and Community Centre. The living library concept originated in Denmark as a means of addressing racial discrimination. Today, the community based program continues to break down stereotypes. Living Libraries function like a normal library, however instead of borrowing a book or DVD, members of the public are able to ‘borrow’ a person that they would not normally meet, for a conversation of up to 30 minutes. Speaking today, Port Stephens Mayor Cr Ron Swan said the concept was a great way of promoting acceptance and understanding in the local community. “The real benefit of the Living Library is its ability to broaden people’s experiences to include more diverse aspects of their community,” he said. “It provides a unique and friendly environment where readers meet people with unusual occupations or lifestyles, or from different social religious or ethnic backgrounds. Also speaking today, Librarian Sue Leverington said the one-on–one discussions had proved immensely popular around the world and hoped it would be equally so in Port Stephens. “This really is an exciting project and one that we would like to continue in the future,” she said. “I am hopeful that our community will embrace the project and ensure its success.” The living books available next Saturday between 10am and 12pm include;
