Port Stephens Mayor, Cr Ron Swan, will launch the 2007-08 Port Stephens Sports Star Awards at Nelson Bay Diggers at 10.00am this Friday 23 May. Last year, the major award went to Craig Bird who has since gone on to star for the Sydney Swans in the AFL. The Port Stephens Sports Star Awards will be held in conjunction with a gala presentation dinner at Nelson Bay Diggers on 6 November and are sure to attract a high calibre of nominees once again. Speaking today, Cr Swan said the awards were designed to acknowledge the outstanding achievements of Port Stephens athletes, sports administrators, coaches and officials. “This night provides the opportunity for Port Stephens to recognise the many people who contribute so much in their sporting endeavours,” he said. “The awards also acknowledge the extremely important role that sport plays in encouraging healthy lifestyles and community involvement.”
Nominations are invited now, for achievements of athletes and officials between 1 October 2007 and 30 September 2008, in the following categories:
The criteria for Awards along with nomination forms are available on Council’s website at All profits achieved through ticket sales and sponsorship will benefit local disadvantaged junior sports people.
“I would like to acknowledge and thank Nelson Bay RSL for their generous sponsorship along with the support of Port Stephens Coaches and the Port Stephens Examiner. I would encourage other local businesses to get behind this extremely worthy event,” Cr Swan said. Contact details |
