Surf Science comes to Port Stephens - Media Release

Last modified: April 23, 2008 - 12:29 AM

One of the country’s leading experts on Environmental Science, Dr Rob Brander will return to Port Stephens to make one of his renowned ‘Science of the Surf’ presentations at the Salamander Library and Community Centre Thursday 8 May at 6.30pm.

Science of the Surf has won several awards nationally and has been seen on Catalyst, The 7.30 Report and A Current Affair.

Dr Brander is Senior Lecturer in the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of NSW and has been studying beaches and surf zones for 20 years both in Canada and Australia.

He was last in Port Stephens in January where his presentation drew a strong audience.

On 8 May, Dr Brander will talk in some detail on the impact of climate change on the coast. This will include issues surrounding rising sea levels, increased storm activity, beach erosion and coastal management options.

Speaking today, Port Stephens Environmental Officer Melinda Anderson said the talk provided a strong message

“Apart from entertainment, Dr Brander’s talk provides anyone who shares the beach with important information. Anyone with an interest in our coastline will find it invaluable.”

Bookings can be made by contacting Melinda Anderson on 49800251 or melinda.anderson@portstephens.nsw.gov.au
