Liquor Accord Leads the Way in Port Stephens - Media ReleaseLast modified: April 23, 2008 - 12:26 AM
The Port Stephens Liquor Accord will play a pivotal role as Police and licensees prepare for Anzac Day this Friday, 25 April. The Accord, which covers all licensed premises in Raymond Terrace, Medowie, Salt Ash, Tilligerry, Karuah, Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest areas, has been particularly successful at curbing irresponsible alcohol-related behaviour since it was formed in November 2004. The aim of the Accord is to deal pro-actively with issues through education of staff and the public and the collective responsibility of Liquor Accord members. Speaking today, Accord Chairman Noel Jackson said he was confident Anzac Day celebrations in the region would be an enjoyable experience. “I think this year’s Anzac Day will present a particular challenge to licensees as it falls on a Friday. However, if our previous two years are any guide we will have a hugely successful day that is relatively incident free,” he said. “By asking licensees to curb the hours that two-up is played to the three hours between 2pm and 5pm, we have been very successful in keeping venues calm and friendly. Educating the public as to their responsibilities on the day is also a key part of our role.” As part of its pro-active approach, the Liquor Accord will be holding a staff training workshop on Tuesday 13 May at Pacific Dunes. “The idea for the workshop came from one of the licensees,” Mr Jackson said.
“It was suggested at a recent Liquor Accord meeting that we hold a training day so that some of the younger and less experienced staff could learn more about why RSA training is so vital. We have also invited sporting bodies who serve liquor to come along and join up on the day as their membership is free.” Contact details |
