Port Stephens Council plays strong hand on tree vandalism - Media ReleaseLast modified: March 18, 2008 - 9:59 AM
Port Stephens Council has today re-affirmed its strong stance regarding tree vandalism in the local government area. Last week, Council officers positioned two shipping containers on foreshore land in Boat Harbour to replace more than 20 Banksia trees which had been destroyed. Speaking today, Port Stephens Council Group Manager, Facilities and Services, Mike Trigar said the destruction required the firmest of action. “This vandalism has been perpetrated by a very selfish individual or individuals who have shown no regard for the impact of their actions on the local community,” he said. “Whilst we acknowledge that our decisive response will not please everybody, Council is determined to play a strong leadership role on this issue.” “I think local residents expect us to take firm action in this case. In recent times we have seen more and more of this type of behaviour and we are determined to eradicate it.” “I would warn anybody considering illegal destruction of trees that they can expect a similar response on the part of Council.” “Due to the harsh conditions prevalent on the coast, the re-establishment of trees in Boat Harbour will take considerable time, money and effort.”
“It is not uncommon for this species to have only a 50% survival rate along the coastal fringe,” Mr Trigar added. Contact details |
