Port Stephens Council will host a comprehensive three week course on the region’s valuable coastal marine environment during the month of April. The course is designed to provide the general community with an opportunity to learn about and help conserve precious rock platform and seagrass areas. Named Project AWARE on the coast, the course is facilitated by marine conservation group, Ocean & Coastal Care Initiatives (OCCI). It is also supported by the Australia Government’s Natural Heritage Trust, Hunter-Central Rivers Catch Management Authority, Port Stephens Council and Marine Parks Authority. It is designed for adults, however students above primary school age are also welcome. The course will commence on 3 April and be held over a three-week period. It consists of evening and weekend lectures as well as two field trips An information session will be held on Thursday 27 March at 7.00pm at Tomaree Library and Community Centre. Speaking today, Environmental Education Officer Melinda Anderson said the course is an enjoyable way to learn more about marine conservation. “The program is a relaxed pace, easy learning tool and is very interactive,” she said. “Students will learn about the ecology of our coastal inter-tidal zone and seagrass areas, as well as cultural and conservation issues.” Those interested should attend the information night or contact Melinda Anderson on 4980 0251 Contact details |
