Port Stephens Council takes lead and saves on energy - Media ReleaseLast modified: March 7, 2008 - 11:52 AM
Port Stephens Council is taking a leadership role on energy waste, committing itself to Earth Hour on 29 March and an ongoing program of energy conservation. Following a successful Earth Hour in Sydney in 2007, the event has gained global appeal in 2008. Earth Hour aims to encourage as many people, businesses and organisations to participate by switching off all non-essential lights between 8 – 9pm on Saturday 29th March 2008. Speaking today, Port Stephens Council General Manager, Peter Gesling said the council would show leadership in not only reducing electricity consumption over the Earth Hour period, but as a long term commitment. “Earth Hour is an excellent opportunity to promote opportunities for ongoing energy savings and Port Stephens Council is determined to be a leader in this area” he said. To highlight the success of the program, Council will be targeting its 10 largest electricity consuming sites which have live monitoring available via an online service, allowing measurement of the savings achieved. “I have put out a call for all staff to make every effort to identify opportunities to reduce usage” said Mr Gesling. “We are using Earth Hour to see just how low we can go with these facilities.” Council is also involved in a regional effort for the month of March to promote the benefits of measures to reduce energy consumption and combat climate change. “Climate Change is an issue that will continue to affect us all. I believe we all have a responsibility to take action to reduce our contribution to the problem” said Mr Gesling. All residents, businesses and organisations can sign up to participate in Earth Hour, or simply find out more information on this event, by visiting www.earthhour.org. Council is also encouraging people to go one step further and have FREE energy efficient light globes and showerheads installed in their home through the Enviro Saver Program. “Council has supported the Enviro Saver Program since its inception with approximately 2500 Port Stephens households taking up the opportunity, which includes more than 50,000 light globes being replaced,” Mr Gesling added. “Whilst small and simple actions such as these will not solve all our problems on their own, they are essential first steps that many people are yet to take up against the global challenge of climate change.” Residents are encouraged to book an appointment through the Enviro Saver Program by calling 1800 755 895 or visiting www.envirosaver.com.au.
