Port Stephens Council Consults Community - Media ReleaseLast modified: November 1, 2009 - 1:28 PM
Port Stephens Council is on the move to improve after collating results from its 2007 Community Survey. The survey, which was conducted over November and December 2007, was conducted by independent consultants Insync Surveys based in Melbourne. Their questions drew responses from a broad cross section of the community and uncovered the community’s perception of Council’s performance, asking what really matters to residents. Speaking today, Port Stephens Council General Manager, Peter Gesling said the results of the survey set a standard for the organisation to improve on. “We are one of the few councils in NSW to conduct this type of comprehensive survey, but we believe it is absolutely necessary if we are serious about our community playing a role in local government,” he said. “We have listened to the residents and they have told us where we are performing strongly and where we need to improve.” “One of the most pleasing aspects of the report is the acknowledgement given to our customer service staff who are perceived as friendly and accessible.” “The community also told us that they value financial sustainability and quality infrastructure and that they want quicker outcomes for building applications.” Mr. Gesling said Council would conduct community surveys on a yearly basis. “The 2007 survey is a line in the sand for us,” he said. “We now have an expectation with regard to performance.” “Each and every year we will go back to the community and ask for their feedback again. We are determined to be accountable to the people that matter.”
