Karuah Main Street Beautification - Media Release
Last modified: November 5, 2009 - 9:20 AM
Work has commenced on stage one of a three-year upgrade and beautification of Karuah’s main street (Old Pacific Highway).
Taurean Road, which had for years tortured thousand of holiday-makers as the traditional Pacific highway bottleneck, will begin a new life as a pedestrian-friendly streetscape.
The beautification programme will involve extensive paving and landscaping and feature an environment-friendly nature strip down the centre of the road.
Speaking today, Port Stephens West Ward Councillor, Josh Hodges said the changes came about after an extensive consultation period with the Karuah community.
“Port Stephens Council and the ‘Karuah Working Together Committee’ have been working towards this outcome for three years,” he said.
“Now that the highway bypasses Karuah, its main street had become an antiquated eyesore. What this upgrade will do is give the town a streetscape it can be proud of and a model for other towns to follow.”
