Hunter’s most toxic weed the focus of council workshop

Last modified: September 29, 2006 - 4:08 PM

‘Green Cestrum’ is a poisonous, noxious weed that is spreading along river banks into farming areas throughout the Hunter region.

Council’s Weed and Pest Management Officer, Graham Prichard, said the foul-smelling menace was not only choking river banks, but killing more livestock than any other weed in the Hunter.

“Death from Green Cestrum is rapid and painful with only a small amount of the weed needed to kill large animals,” Mr Prichard said.

To help farmers and members of the public identify and manage Green Cestrum and other noxious weeds, Port Stephens Council will be holding a free 90 minute workshop at the Woodville School of Arts (next to Iona Public School) from 7pm on Wednesday 18 October.

“This workshop is designed to provide people with the skills and knowledge to detect potential weed problems early and prevent large infestations from occurring.”

“It will also cover the basic concepts of river management and opportunities for integrating weed management with holistic farm management programs.”

Bookings are recommended and can be made by telephoning Port Stephens Council on 4980 0279.

The workshop is a Port Stephens Council initiative and is being conducted as part of national ‘Weed Buster Week’, an initiative designed to raise awareness and reduce the weed problem in Australia.
