More tree planting for Local Government Week - media release

Last modified: August 5, 2009 - 3:41 PM

More than 400 school children will plant 5,400 trees in Port Stephens this week to celebrate Local Government (LG) Week and National Tree Planting Day.

Speaking today, Environmental Education Officer Melinda Anderson said the tree planting activities were a great opportunity for children to learn about the natural environment.

"Although National Tree Panting Day was on Sunday, Council wanted to expand the tree planting activities to celebrate LG Week," she said.

Today, students from Tomaree Public School and Soldiers Point Public school are planting native shrubs at Mambo Wetlands, Salamander Bay.

Tomorrow, Wednesday 5 August, students from year one at Anna Bay Public School will plant native trees at Samurai Beach Resort to enhance the Koala habitat.

On Thursday, 6 August students from kindergarten at Anna Bay Public School will plant trees at the flora and fauna reserve at the Bay Village Retreat.

"These children are learning important lessons about biodiversity," said Mrs Anderson.

"When they can see Koalas in the trees at Samurai Beach they understand that planting native trees can help protect native wildlife," she continued.

Coordinated by Planet Ark National Tree Day started in 1996 and since then more than 2 million volunteers have planted over 13 million native trees and shrubs.
