Stories in the Park 2008
On Tuesday September 23rd from 10am – 12.30pm the third 'Stories in the Park' literacy event will be held in Boomerang Park, Raymond Terrace.
At last years event a world record was set for the most number of children aged 0-5listening to stories at one venue at one time. The record was 334 children!
Children from local pre-schools, schools and the community aged 0-5 years are invited to join us again this year for a morning of reading, story-telling, entertainment and fun. Stories, activities and entertainment will be provided by Wacky Wombat, Ethnic Storytelling, NSW Fire Service, Mick the Didge, Pauls' Magic Show, Rosies School of Rock, Puppeteer Ross Brown, Stories in the Streets, Port Stephens Library and more.
Current research indicates that children who are read to from an early age are more likely to succeed at school and in life, and this exciting literacy event will provide an opportunity for the community to demonstrate once again that Raymond Terrace values and supports the growth and development of our children.
The stories in the park event is sponsored by Port Stephens Council and the Communities for Children program.

Kids Who Read Succeed - Program Evaluation Report
The KWRS pilot project, funded by the Hunter Area Assistance Scheme, has been a successful early literacy program for children aged 0-5 years. The three year project, undertaken in the Irrawang community of Raymond Terrace, was coordinated by Port Stephens Council and delivered by Library Services from April 2005 to April 2008.
The project involved paid staff and volunteers visiting homes of children in the local Irrawang community one morning a week and reading to the children at their place of residence. A book from the Library was loaned to the child and exchanged the following week. This program has had significant impact on participating families and the broader community. It particularly influenced those vulnerable families that traditionally remain isolated from the general community. The results of this project include improved early literacy for children, parents bonding with their children in a more positive way and families developing self-confidence to participate in community activities.
The project was evaluated by the Family Action Centre at the University of Newcastle and a copy of the Evaluation Report is available via the links below.
