Waste & Recycling

Port Stephens Council is committed to reducing the impact of waste on the environment. Its innovative approach to waste management has seen a reduction in the amount of waste to landfill by approximately 60% by using the following technologies and services to manage domestic and commercial waste:

  • Port Stephens Council was the first in New South Wales to use 'alternative waste technology'. It uses the Bedminster Composting plant (owned by SITA Australia) to process our domestic waste into compost, providing a resource rich in nutrients and organic matter.
  • Households and businesses have a separate bin for recyclables which are sorted and re-manufactured into new products.
  • Excess waste received Salamander Bay Waste Transfer Station is sorted and where possible reused or recycled.
  • Annual bulk and green waste kerbside collections
  • Free weekly Green Waste Drop off service at various locations across Port Stephens.
