Waste Education
Resources for teachers and students
Council has a number of resources available to students and teachers who are studying waste management. This includes tours of waste facilities, classroom talks, fact sheets, help with school waste audits, and worksheets. The resources aim to allow students to understand all aspects of waste management and to trace the path of waste from your household wheelie bin to its final place or use.
Council can organise tours of the following waste facilities:
- The Bedminster Composting Facility - Visit Australia's first alternative waste technology. The Bedminster plant composts the organic fraction of our RED bins. The resulting compost is sold as a soil conditioner and fertiliser. Tours available to high school and older students, Mondays to Wednesdays.
- The Recycling Facility at Thornton - see how your recycling is sorted and bailed for re-manufacture into new products. Tours available Weekdays.
- King Park - a decommissioned landfill site
Port Stephen's collection of fact sheets on waste management includes:
- What Can be Recycled in the Port Stephens Local Government area - "Recycling Contamination"
- The "A-Z of Waste" - provides examples of what should be placed in your red and yellow bins and how to dispose of your waste that shouldn't be placed in either household bin
- The "Materials Recycling Facility" (MRF) - explains what happens at the Recycling facility and how your recyclables are sorted and bailed
- "Bin Etiquette" - details how to present your bin to ensure that it is emptied each week
All about items accepted for recycling in your household recycling bin
Available for download below are five fact sheets that explain the recycling process for each of the recyclable items collected in your household recycling bin; plastics, paper and cardboard, aluminium cans, steel cans, and glass bottles.
There is also a factsheet on recycling that busts those myths once and for all...
Waste Audits
Waste audits are usually conducted at the commencement of a waste reduction program. They provide you with baseline information regarding the quantity of wastes generated and looks at what types of waste are generated. Council can help you conduct a waste audit of your school.
