Mosquito monitoring and information

Last modified: May 4, 2007 - 3:33 PM

Information on mosquito numbers, names and characteristics.

Port Stephens Council participates in the NSW Arbovirus Surveillance Program (adult mosquito monitoring and virus testing) between November and April each year. Simple traps using dry ice, a small light and a fan attract and collect mosquitoes.

These are sent to experts at Westmead Hospital for counting and identification. The results are used to identify trends in mosquito populations and are publicly available.

The NSW Arbovirus Surveillance Program Website contains these results and a further wealth of information on mosquitoes and the viruses they may transmit. The “root” link for the site is http://www.arbovirus.health.nsw.gov.au/ .

Specific information relevant to the Port Stephens area is located at the link below.

For trapping locations and other local data view the map of Port Stephens at:http://www.arbovirus.health.nsw.gov.au/areas/arbovirus/results/portstephens/portstephens.htm

Once you have identified a trap site of interest, view the collections for that site. The mosquito species collected from that site are listed and if you click on the species name you are linked to information concerning that species.
